Only DXA gives you individualized accurate data needed to get started and feedback to fast track results for your health, exercise, nutrition and weight loss.

The Washington Institute of Sports Medicine is offering DXA (DEXA) Whole Body Composition Scans. Because of the Institute’s DXA Body Composition expertise we have had individuals schedule from all over the country, traveling from New York, the Southeast, Alaska, Southern California and even traveling Internationally.  The Institute DXA Body Composition is open to the public, requiring no medical referral.

This test is exclusively available to anyone desiring Clinically Exact Values for their Body Fat and Body Fat Percentage, Muscle, Skeletal Bone Density, Ideal Body Weight, Fat and Weight Loss Analysis and Goals.  Calorie Energy Expenditures (Basal and Resting Metabolic Rates, and Activity Calories) based upon individualized Body Composition Results and measured Metabolic Tissue are also included in the reports given to each person tested. Calorie expenditure is dictated by Body Composition, not Body Weight.

Anyone can self refer themselves to The Washington Institute of Sports Medicine for this type of Body Fat Measurement and Testing, even though we do receive many referrals from Physicians, Nutritionists and Dieticians, Weight Loss Centers, Personal Trainers, Body Builder Groups, MMA Fighters Groups, CrossFit Gyms and Professional Sports Teams.

CLINICAL ACCURACY

DXA is the Reference Benchmark  for measuring Body Composition. This is the Gold Standard by which all other methods are compared with for accuracy. DXA is so accurate and reproducible, that it is used in many other clinical and research applications. The DXA application for determination of Body Composition is relatively new, as this technology has historically been used for Bone Scans to clinically assess Bone Density for diagnosing Osteoporosis. It is now considered the absolute benchmark for accuracy for assessing of Body Composition that other techniques cannot match.

The Washington Institute’s DXA provides a detailed High Density Digital Image of the scanned body, displaying Skeletal Bone, as well as, the Soft Tissues; Lean Muscle and Fat. Numerical measurement data of Segmented Regional Body Areas and Total Body Values are displayed.

DXA TECHNOLOGY

DXA (also known as DEXA) Body Composition Analysis uses Dual Energy X-Ray Absorptiometry. It works by passing 2 different energies through the tissues of the body which are blocked or attenuated relative to the density of the tissues that they are penetrating. Bone, Fat and Muscle all have individual characteristic densities, which allow for the calculation of the relative masses of each. The DXA Scan is perfectly safe and harmless. It emits extremely Low Dose Radiation, which in fact is less than several days of exposure from natural background sources (cosmic radiation + environmental isotopes). It may be compared to the radiation exposure on a cross-country plane trip, or working outside in the sun for a day or two. The Total Body Scan takes approximately 6 minutes, while you lie still.

3 COMPARTMENT MODEL

Clinical DXA Body Composition Scans Analysis takes into account 3 anatomical compartments:

  • Fat Mass (Subcutaneous Fat and Internal Visceral Fat)
  • Lean Muscle Mass
  • Skeletal Bone Mass

IDEAL BODY WEIGHT GOALS

Your Ideal Body Weight is accurately determined from this data, giving you an attainable body weight that is based upon your actual Lean Body Weight (Muscle and Bone), Fat Mass, Bone Mass and Density  and your Core Body Weight, which includes your Lean Body Weight and Essential Fat. Knowing your individual values gives you the goal to achieve and maintain your healthiest weight based your own body type and frame.

WHOLE BODY SCAN REPORTS

DXA Body Composition is so accurate that it can detail exactly where fat is regionally distributed throughout the body. Reports provide a Geographical Map of the Body detailing Skeletal Bone Density and Bone Mineral Content,  Fat Mass, Lean Mass, Percent Fat, Percent Lean, and Values for 7 regional areas: each Arm, each Leg, Trunk (and even Head). DXA Evaluation of Excessive Intra-Abdominal Visceral Fat Stores (Fat surrounding internal organs) and Fat Distribution can predict Health Risks.

Absolutely no other method for determining Body Composition provides these exact Regional Values for Fat Distribution. All other methods use a 2 compartment model taking into account only Fat Mass and all of the rest of the body – Fat Free Mass. They do not take into account Bone Density and Bone Mass.

DXA thus measures Skeletal Bone Volume and Density Characteristics in determining accurate values. DXA is superior to Body Mass Index (BMI), which uses Height / Weight, Skin Calipers, Hydrostatic Weighing, Bod Pod (which uses Air Volume Displacement (Plethysmography), and Body Fat Scales (which use Bioelectrical Impedance)

TRACKING MUSCLE GAIN & FAT LOSS

DXA can precisely measure your Loss or Gain of Lean Mass or Fat Mass, showing a Body Map of location and amounts, allowing you to see progress of specific Diets and/or Exercise Programs. Knowing how much and where on the body you are building Lean Muscle and Losing Fat is possible with DXA, and allows you to see your results and whether you are succeeding with your program. The image and numbers show where you were and how you have changed your body.

DXA PROFESSIONAL APPLICATIONS

The Green Bay Packers use DXA Body Composition to track their players progress off season and throughout the season. The full body scan specifies what areas of the body need the most work during the off season workouts. It can also be used to track muscle atrophy from athletic injury and muscle gain during injury rehab.

The Biggest Loser TV Show uses DXA technology to track weight loss with their participants. It is extremely important for persons losing weight, to know what they are losing. Diets alone generally result in 50% fat loss, and 50% lean muscle loss. With appropriate diet and exercise, fat loss is maximized, minimizing lean muscle loss and even maximizing muscle gain. It is important to know the difference, and adjust your program accordingly to maximize fat mass loss.

The Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado uses Body Composition DXA technology to assess and develop training programs for Olympic Athletes, and track their progress with repeat assessments.

Whether you are a Recreational or Professional Athlete, an Extreme Fitness Athlete, or you are beginning or maintaining a Cross Fit Program, or a Body Builder or Strength Competitor, this DXA evaluation can enhance your results by showing you very specific improvements and results, while giving you feedback on your training and nutrition program.

If you are obese, overweight, or challenging yourself to a healthier body transformation, the DXA will give you the individualized information that you need to get started, and the continued feedback to keep your weight loss program going in the right direction.
