ImPACT Testing

Washington Institute of Sports Medicine (WISM) takes great pride in providing the up most care for our patients and athletes through our physical therapy clinic and sports acceleration program. We are very excited to announce that WISM is now offering ImPACT baseline and post-concussion testing as another step to ensure the safety of our athletes.

A concussion is caused by sudden blow or jarring motion to the head or body that disrupts the normal functioning of the brain and can cause significant and possibly permanent neurological impairments. A concussion is the ONLY sports injury that can affect a student athletes personality as well as their ability to learn in school.  The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that about 300,000 concussions are sustained annually during sports related activities in the United States and out of those, an estimated 62,000 of those concussions are suffered by student athletes.

ImPACT (Immediate Post-Concussion Assessment and Cognitive Testing) is currently the most widely utilized computerized concussion management program in the world and is used by the NFL, NHL, MLB, WWE, US Special Forces, 7,400+ high schools and 1,000+ Universities throughout the country. Developed by clinical experts, ImPACT is the most widely used and scientifically validated computerized concussion system. The ImPACT test provides the neurocognitive tools and services that have been accepted as the best and most state-of-the-art practices for determining a safe return to play decision made by a Credentialed ImPACT Consultant (CIC).

concussion-mgmt-modelThough the utilization of tools such as the ImPACT Concussion Management Model we are able to partner with our in house CIC and Sports Medicine Physician, Dr. Thomas DePuydt, M.D. of OrthoWashington as a key resource in concussion management and determining when it is safe for an athlete to return to play after a concussion is suspected.

While ImPACT will not prevent concussions, it will allow properly trained professionals, such as Dr. DePuydt, to track the cognitive status of the concussed athlete to help guard against a premature return to play.
