T Bird players are treated for injuries by the Institute's professional team of Athletic Trainers and Physical Therapists. The also receive professional Performance Acceleration Training and Sports Nutrition in The Institute's&nbsp; Programs</font>. </font></font></p> <p><font face="Arial,helvetica" size="2"><font face="Times New Roman" size="3">The Seattle franchise joined the Western Hockey League as the Seattle Breakers in the 1977-78 season. The team became the Thunderbirds at the start of the 1985-86 season. The team won the WHL's Western Division Championship in 1997. The best regular season was in 1989-90 with the team finishing at 52-17-3, including a home record of 33-2-1. The team had three of the league's top six scorers.</font></p> <p><font face="Times New Roman" size="3"></font></p> <p><font face="Times New Roman" size="3">Starting in the 1989-90 season the Thunderbirds began playing some home games in the Seattle Center Coliseum, home of the Seattle Supersonics NBA team. Until then, all games were at the Seattle Center Arena, a building that seated 4,139 for hockey as opposed to the Coliseum's 11, 907. The Thunderbirds now play full-time in the Key Arena, a state of the art facility which seats 11,500 for hockey.</font></p> <p><font face="Times New Roman" size="3"></font></p> <p><font face="Times New Roman" size="3">The Thunderbirds have drawn over 200,000 fans in eight of the past nine seasons. Until the 1991-92 season, Seattle held the WHL single game attendance record with a standing room only crowd of 12,464. That record was broken in the 1991-92 season when the Thunderbirds visited Tacoma and a crowd of 15,240 was on hand for the game, which was won by the Thunderbirds.</font></p> <p><font face="Times New Roman" size="3"></font></p> <p><font face="Times New Roman" size="3">The Western Hockey League has 18 teams, 6 in the Central Division, 5 in the Eastern Division and 7 in the Western Division. There are four American teams, the Seattle Thunderbirds, the Tri-City Americans, the Spokane Chiefs, and the Portland Winter Hawks. Except for one home game and one road game against the East and Central Division teams, all of their games are interdivisional. </font></p> <p><font face="Times New Roman" size="3">All Thunderbirds games are broadcast on local radio on 1090 AM. Media wise the Thunderbirds are covered by 4 major television stations, over 50 radio stations, 5 daily newspapers plus several weekly newspapers.</font> </p></font> <p><strong><u><font color="midnightblue" size="5">About the Seattle Sounders</font></u></strong></p> <p><font color="firebrick"><img height="240" alt="" hspace="5" src="../../content/00/00/05/71/38/userdirectory19.content/311115.vmg.jpg" width="181" align="left" vspace="5" border="0">The Washington Institute of Sports Medicine and Health</font> provide Sports Medicine Services and Athletic Training to the Sounders Team. The Institutes Athletic Trainers and Physical Therapists are at all of the Sounders home games at Memorial Stadium. The Institute's Facility and programs round out a full compliment of services to the Sounders in Sports Physicals, &nbsp;treating injuries, and setting up specialized Acceleration and Performance Enhancement training programs.</p> <p><font color="black">The Seattle Sounders originally played in the old North American Soccer Leage from 1974 - 1983. In 1994 they were reorganized into A - League play. They won back to back championships in 1995 AND 1996, and hold numerous distinctions that clearly indicate that they are a consistent contender.</font><font color="black">In 2002, they finished with a record of 23-4-1, the 2nd best record in league history. The 2003 record saw them claim the Pacific Division title.</font></p> <p>The Sounders play at the newly named Quest Field (formerly Seahawks Stadium) and are coached by former Sounder player, Brian Schmetzer.
